State Recognizes Politics & History Prof. Hazel Varella with 'Unsung Heroine Award'

The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women recently honored Politics & History Professor Hazel Varella as a recipient of the "Unsung Heroine Award." Prof. Varella accepted the accolade - which celebrates extraordinary women across Massachusetts - during a special ceremony at the State House.

State Representative Claire Cronin nominated Prof. Varella, calling her commitment to the town of Easton "unparalleled" and highlighting her many contributions as both educator and historian.

Prof. Varella served for 41 years as a public school teacher in Easton, where she also created the town's historical commission and founded a community service program for local students. She continues to work at the Easton Historical Society and Museum, as she has done since 1967.

Varella joined Curry's Politics & History faculty in 1988.
