Dan Linskey, CE '97 - Criminal Justice, Sociology

Dan Linskey '97,  spent most of his adult life working in and with communities to prevent violent crime on the streets of Boston. As the Superintendent-in-Chief of the Boston Police Department (retired 2014) he was the highest ranking uniform officer in the Boston Police Department, responsible for the day to day operations of a department of over 3,000 members.

During his 28-year career with the BPD, Linskey was recognized for helping decrease violent crime in the city and also boosting public trust in the department.  On April 15, 2013 Linskey was serving as the Incident Commander for the Boston Marathon. He oversaw the response to the horrific bombings that day, including the evacuation of the scene and the subsequent investigation, and eventual manhunt, that lead to the arrest and capture of the terrorists responsible.

In 2014, Linskey took a lifetime of crime prevention experience into the private sector, founding The Linskey Group LLC, a company which provides a wide range of security, law enforcement, and emergency management services.  The Group works in collaboration with some of the most prominent law enforcement agencies in the country, including the Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of State Anti-Terrorism Advisory Bureau.

Recently, Linskey made his way back to his alma mater, Curry College, to speak at the "New Directions in Violence Prevention" Conference.  The Conference showcased innovators in the field of violence prevention:  from those who work to reduce risk factors of violence with young children, to those who teach violence prevention in schools, to criminal justice professionals who practice intervention as a way to make communities safer.

Linskey discussed ways to eliminate the 'Us vs. Them' mentality that exists between citizens and police in many American communities these days. One suggestion was to update the methods in which we train police officers.

"We've got to change the way we occupy our neighborhoods, utilize intelligence and technology, and we have to be transparent," said Linskey.
