M.Ed. Alums Share Their First-Year Teaching Experiences

On Saturday, April 30, three alumni returned to the Curry College Plymouth campus to share their first-year teaching experiences with current Master of Education (M.Ed.) students.
Jill Palenstijn '14, Grade 5 Teacher at North Pembroke Elementary, Toni Bowers '15, Grade 3 Teacher at Richardson Olmsted School in Easton, and Crystal Hay '15, Grade 6 Special Education Teacher at Plymouth South Middle School spoke about several aspects of the profession such as landing the job, navigating a new school and new colleagues, and interacting with students and parents.

"Keep in contact with your network," said Toni. "I keep in contact with the teacher who worked with me during my Pre-Practicum and the staff at Curry - they're all available to help you when you need it."

Crystal stressed the importance of embracing every opportunity for experience in the field and being aware that everyone you work with makes a difference.

"The janitor at my school recently told me he put in a good word for me after my first day there as a substitute teacher," she said.
