Lynne Santangelo '14 - MBA

Lynne Santangelo'14 is not afraid of spreading herself too thin when it comes to achieving success.

"That's how I operate.  I need to be everywhere," says Lynne.

That's partly why she applied for the project manager position for the MBA Capstone project; she was also urged to do so by her classmates. The Capstone is an applied research project where students, working as a team of consultants, partner with a business to solve specific challenges facing the organization.

"I had to submit my resume and the professors asked questions about prior experience and how I'd manage the project.  A week later they called me and said I got the job."

Lynne's experience as a project manager in the construction industry and her role as Executive Assistant to the V.P. of IT Infrastructure at Biogen, a global biotech company specializing in MS and hemophilia drugs, played an important factor to the appointment.  Another qualification that strengthened her candidacy was Lynne's ability to juggle - she had a second job bartending on weekends, which she has done since high school.

"That's how I landed my job at Biogen. One of my customers told me she had an opening and thought I'd be good at it."

After two years at Biogen, Lynne's ever-growing responsibilities inspired her to delve into earning her MBA.

"I was ready to learn more about business and be more prepared in the world I was working in.  I really wanted to have a say, and I wanted people to respect me and my analytical skills. Curry has given me a foundation that has really helped me be a confident person and leader."

Lynne found a way to manage her multiple responsibilities and strike a balance that worked for her through Curry's hybrid learning and cohort-based program structure.

"I was constantly moving.  Not only was Biogen very supportive, but I would follow the timelines and update the MBA cohort by using Blackboard," said Lynne, speaking about the learning system used for online instruction and class communication that enhances weekly face-to-face classrooms sessions.  "Communication is key."

Communicating well, and engaging with classmates, is advice Lynne would give to anyone who considers pursuing an MBA.

"I liked the cohort mentality.  It didn't feel like 'going back to school'.  It felt like we came to Curry for a meeting every week," says Lynne, describing Curry's team-based learning model that emulates typical workplace scenarios.

"These 22 peers became my family," notes Lynne. In fact classmates used to call Lynne 'The Mom.' "We went out every eight weeks, the last night of every class.  We would go out and have something to eat together - it made such a difference and it created such a bond. We enjoyed each other's company... it becomes an enjoyable part of your routine."
