Stepping onto the ice at Madison Square Garden isn’t just part of the job for Danielle Reid Stein ‘25, it’s a lifelong dream come to life. As a member of the New York Rangers On-Ice Blue Crew, she spends her game nights just a few feet away from the action, helping keep the ice in top condition while experiencing the energy of one of the NHL’s most iconic arenas.
On home game nights, Danielle arrives early to prepare for the fast-paced environment ahead. Her responsibilities include organizing intermission advertisements and props, coordinating materials at ice level, and assisting with on-ice maintenance during TV timeouts. She is part of the team that skates onto the ice to shovel and clean the playing surface, helping ensure a safe and seamless game experience for players and fans alike. “Being on the ice at MSG is incredible every single time,” Danielle said. “It’s a fast-paced environment, but it’s unbelievable to be part of it.”
This season has already given Danielle unforgettable memories, one being the Rangers’ “Throwback to the Greats” night, featuring a tribute to franchise legends. Hearing Sam Rosen open the ceremony and honoring names like Derek Stepan, Henrik Lundqvist, Mike Richter, Adam Graves, and Stéphane Matteau was “surreal,” she recalled. Being part of the celebration from ice level, surrounded by the history she grew up watching as a kid growing up in New York, made the moment even more special.
With the Rangers celebrating their 100th anniversary, Danielle knows she’s part of a historic chapter in team history.
Danielle Reid Stein '25I grew up watching the Rangers, and now I get to be part of the organization during such a monumental season. Being on the ice for their 100th year feels like I’m witnessing history from the best seat in the house.
Danielle credits her time at Curry College with helping prepare her for this opportunity. She notes that persistence, relationship-building, and staying connected were key lessons she carried from Curry into the professional sports world. Her Sport and Recreation Management coursework, experience as a member of the Curry College women’s hockey team, and internship with the Athletics Sports Information Director all helped shape her interest in the field.
As the season continues, Stein is especially excited for more of the Rangers’ centennial theme nights and the chance to continue strengthening relationships with her team behind the scenes. “This season has already been special, and I know there’s a lot more to come,” she says. Danielle also hopes to build a long-term career in the sports industry, and her role with the Rangers is giving her firsthand experience in the operations that define professional athletics. Working in such a dynamic environment allows her to develop the skills, relationships, and industry insight she plans to carry into her future career.
For current Curry students interested in pursuing careers in professional sports or live events, Stein emphasizes the importance of involvement and relationship-building. “Take in as much knowledge as you can from your classes,” she said. “Build strong relationships with your peers and professors, stay persistent, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Opportunities in the sports world often happen because of who you know and the passion you bring.”
