Business Management Professor Ishani Tewari presented a paper entitled "Durable Ownership, Time Allocation, and Female Labor Force Participation: Evidence from China's Home Appliances to the Countryside Rebate," at the Williams College Economics Department.
Dr. Tewari's research tracked the impact of a rebate on durable household goods - such as fridges and washing machines - that the Chinese government offered to rural families. The rebate prompted increased purchases of such goods, which in turn led to significant reductions in housework and a boost in female labor force participation.
