Dr. Kara Phillips, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at Curry College in the Exercise Science Program. Her classroom philosophy is to blend the foundational basics with current research findings. She believes in tying together course topics with research to show students not only information, but how we discover new knowledge that will become the basics in 50 years.

Kara’s research background spans human and animal-based trials from both applied and exploratory topics. Her dissertation, titled “Effects of Cross-Sex Hormone Therapy on Skeletal Muscle in Resistance Trained Rats,” captures her key research interests of skeletal muscle adaptations, resistance training, and sex hormones. Kara believes in an interdisciplinary approach to research, as all fields can stand to learn more from each other. She has also worked as a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach, giving her insight into the needs of practical applications of science.

As a research-minded educator, Kara is committed to developing the critical thinking skills of her students and getting them to go beyond the textbook. She is excited to mentor students and get them involved in developing research projects of their own.
