Academic Excellence
Experiencing a new culture, traveling, and spending an extended time abroad has always appealed to Fin Leary '28, so he knew long before starting college that studying abroad would be part of his journey. This fall, that dream became reality as Fin headed to Scotland, a destination he has always dreamed of visiting. Drawn to the country’s rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking natural landscapes, Fin saw Scotland as the perfect place to immerse in something new while still feeling connected through the shared language of English.
Although English is spoken in Scotland, Fin quickly learned that language doesn’t always translate seamlessly. “There are differences in what words mean and what things are called,” Fin explains. These subtle linguistic distinctions became one of the most noticeable cultural differences, reminding him daily that even familiar environments can offer fresh perspectives.
But beyond language, it’s the everyday routines and social norms that have expanded Fin’s understanding the most. “Living abroad has shown me the differences between cultures, especially the ones you would normally not think about,” Fin says. While travelers often anticipate major differences like currency or accents, Fin found deeper insight in the ordinary moments- what people eat, how they greet one another, or the unspoken rhythms of daily life. “Often overlooked is the way people do things, or the everyday acts that are normal here but not at home.”
Academics abroad also proved to be a meaningful shift. At Curry, Fin was accustomed to smaller class sizes and continuous assignments. In Scotland, the class structure looks and feels different. This semester, Fin is enrolled in three courses, each meeting twice a week: one lecture and one seminar. “There are more people in each class than at Curry, and my biggest lecture has about 350 students.”
Instead of regular homework, students complete two or three major assignments throughout the semester, each worth a significant percentage of their final grade. “These assignments are more like the midterms or finals we would have at home,” Fin explains. With fewer opportunities to earn points, the academic environment demands strong self-discipline and independence- skills Fin has been developing throughout the experience.
For Fin, studying abroad has been nothing short of transformative. “It has introduced and immersed me in a foreign culture and allowed me to experience things that I never otherwise would have,” he said. Navigating a new educational system has strengthened his adaptability, while living in a different country has deepened his cultural awareness and confidence.
The challenges and discoveries of studying in Scotland have shaped Fin’s perspective in lasting ways. “Studying abroad has definitely helped me grow personally and academically,” he said. From new landscapes to new learning styles, Fin’s time abroad has opened doors to experiences that will continue to influence his life long after returning home.
