What is Study Abroad?

Study abroad refers to academic opportunities that allow Curry students to earn credit while exploring new environments, either internationally or within the United States. These programs can take place during the fall or spring semesters, summer sessions, January terms, or Spring Break.

Study away is not just about location, it’s about experiencing education in a new context. Whether you’re taking classes at a university abroad, participating in a faculty-led travel course, or joining a third-party provider program that blends classroom and experiential learning, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the world and your place in it.

What are the benefits of studying away?

Studying away is a transformative experience that impacts both your academic and personal growth. It allows you to:

  • Develop Global Awareness: See how different cultures approach education, work, art, politics, and daily life.
  • Build Adaptability and Confidence: Living in a new place challenges you to problem-solve, navigate unfamiliar systems, and step outside your comfort zone.
  • Gain Career Skills: Employers and graduate schools value intercultural competence, independence, and critical thinking—all skills sharpened through study away.
  • Experience Experiential Learning: Connect classroom concepts with real-world experiences, whether visiting historic landmarks, conducting field research, or participating in cultural traditions.
  • Form Lifelong Connections: Friendships with fellow travelers, bonds with host families, or classmates abroad often last long after college.

Many Curry students describe study away as one of the most impactful parts of their college experience, shaping not only how they see the world, but also how they see themselves.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To participate in a study away program, students must meet certain requirements to ensure academic readiness and personal responsibility. Generally, students must:

  • Complete at least 24 college credits at the time of travel.
  • Hold a minimum GPA of 2.5 to show consistent academic performance.
  • Be in good financial and disciplinary standing with Curry College.

Some programs may have additional requirements, such as language proficiency or specific coursework. Confirm early with the Office of Global Programming to make sure you qualify for your program of interest.

What types of study away experiences can I participate in?

Curry offers a range of opportunities to match different student needs, schedules, and budgets:

  • Semester and Year-Long Programs (through Third-Party Providers): If you want a full immersion experience, you can spend a semester or academic year abroad through one of Curry’s approved third-party provider programs. These providers specialize in study abroad and connect you with accredited universities or program centers worldwide. They also handle housing, excursions, on-site staff, and orientation, ensuring strong support throughout your stay.
  • Short-Term Travel Courses: Curry faculty-led programs combine on-campus learning with a structured travel component, typically offered during January, Spring Break, or summer. These courses let you gain cultural and experiential learning in a focused and accessible way.
  • Other Third-Party Provider Programs: Providers may also offer shorter summer or January-term programs. These options are ideal for students seeking an international experience without committing to a full semester.

Each option has its advantages. Short-term programs are easier to fit into busy schedules, while semester and year-long programs allow for deeper cultural and academic engagement.

Can I earn academic credit for study away?

Yes. Study away programs are designed to keep you on track toward graduation while expanding your education beyond campus.

  • Semester and Year-Long Programs through Providers: Credits transfer to Curry as transfer credit without grades. These credits apply toward your degree but do not affect your GPA.
  • Faculty-Led Programs: Courses run by Curry faculty abroad are graded like any other Curry class and appear on your transcript with full letter grades.

Students should work with their academic advisor and the Office of Global Programming to ensure all credits align with graduation requirements.

How can I finance my study away experience?

Cost is often a concern, and Curry provides resources to make study away possible.

  • Tuition and program fees for third-party provider programs are paid directly to the provider.
  • Curry institutional financial aid does not apply to provider programs.
  • Federal or state financial aid may be available if you complete a consortium agreement and submit an invoice to Student Financial Services.
  • Many providers offer scholarships specifically for study abroad students. Curry students are encouraged to apply.

Outside scholarships, fundraising, and personal budgeting are also effective ways to fund your experience. Many alumni report that the benefits of study away—personal growth, global skills, and lifelong memories—far outweigh the cost.

How do I get started?

Planning early ensures the best program options and credit alignment.

  1. Explore Options: Browse programs on Curry’s Via TRM platform to see locations, subjects, and program structures.
  2. Meet with Your Advisor: Discuss how study abroad fits into your academic plan.
  3. Connect with Global Programming: Meet with the Office of Global Programming to narrow down programs and review requirements.
  4. Apply: Submit an approval request through Curry and complete the application with your provider.
  5. Prepare for Departure: Attend pre-departure orientations offered by both Curry and your program provider. These sessions cover academics, cultural adaptation, health and safety, and travel logistics.
  6. Launch Your Experience: Immerse yourself fully abroad while knowing you have support from both Curry and the program site.

Why does studying abroad matter?

Study away is more than a trip. Students who participate often return with:

  • Increased independence and resilience
  • Confidence navigating unfamiliar systems and cultures
  • Enhanced intercultural communication and problem-solving skills
  • A more distinctive résumé for employment or graduate school

You will also experience the joy and challenge of living in a new culture. You will come home with stories, friendships, and perspectives that continue to shape your life long after graduation.
