The Department of Public Safety & Police has several objectives but chief among them is providing a safe and secure environment for members of the Curry Community. Curry College is a closed campus located in the town of Milton, Massachusetts and the campus is nestled in several neighborhoods throughout the town. Members of the Department are responsible for conducting proactive patrols of the entire campus to ensure that there are no unauthorized individuals on campus property. The Department has several patrol vehicles and patrol bicycles to enhance our patrol efforts in addition to the utilization of foot patrols when appropriate. The Department is also tasked with physical access control to campus via the Main Gate off Blue Hill Ave and the rear gate off Brush Hill Road.
The Main Gate is open from 7am -7pm at which point all individuals wishing to access campus will have to stop at the gate and provide valid Curry credentials to gain access. The Brush Hill Road Gate is open Monday through Friday 7am-7pm.
The Department also has over 200 CCTV cameras placed in strategic areas across campus to help with security and a robust ID access program for most major points of egress on campus.
The Department may be notified by members of the Curry Community or by our external partners at Milton Police or Milton Fire that there is an active emergency taking place on campus. Officers will respond immediately to the scene and begin rendering aid or taking other appropriate action. All members of the Department are trained in First Aid, CPR, AED, Narcan, and Stop the Bleed and our patrol vehicles are equipped with first aid bags, an AED, Narcan, and tourniquets.
The Department will coordinate all responses from external partners and we meet on a regular basis with Milton Fire, Coastal EMS, and Milton Police to familiarize them with our campus.
Dialing 911 on campus from a cell phone will ring to the Massachusetts State Police, once you state your location, they will transfer the call to the Milton Police Dispatch who will then dispatch either police, fire, and or EMS depending on the call. When in doubt dial 911 and rest assured emergency responders will arrive on scene in very short time.
All Department personnel receive training in active shooter and active threat response to include video presentations, table-top drills, and actual physical exercises and training across campus.
The Department also partners with the Boston Police Academy to host C.R.A.S.E training to campus community members, which is the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events.
While the Department staff is presently unarmed, we have multiple agencies in the immediate vicinity that would respond with tactical units to mitigate the threat on campus. This includes the Milton Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, the Boston Police Department, and the Metro Law Enforcement Council SWAT Team (Metro-LEC). These agencies participate in training on campus in preparation for their response during an ongoing event.
The campus also has an alert system both on mobile devices and an external speaker across campus. These can be utilized to issue shelter in place, evacuation, or all clear orders during an event. Student phone numbers are automatically enrolled in the program and will receive text alerts.
Our officers will proactively enforce all parking and traffic regulations and students, faculty, staff, and visitors to our campus are required to stop for Public Safety vehicles. All Public Safety vehicles are fully marked and have emergency lights and sirens; failing to stop for a Public Safety vehicle could result in a fine.
All traffic regulations apply on campus, this includes but it is not limited to stopping at stop signs, yielding the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks or not passing or overtaking a vehicle on a solid double yellow line. It is also important to follow all vehicle safety measures such as using your directionals, ensuring your vehicles’ safety features are properly functioning, and having properly registered vehicles on campus. All vehicles must have an active registration and insurance to be operated on campus property.
Public Safety can issue traffic citations that are payable to Curry College and applied directly to your student account; there is an appeals process and more information in the Parking Section.
Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility and is really important in a shared residential setting like higher education. The campus is equipped with fire prevention and detection devices such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and carbon monoxide monitors. Fire drills are practiced on a regular basis and the Milton Fire Department is very familiar with our campus and responding to calls for service. We are very fortunate to be served by Engine 4, which is right at the end of Atherton Street and practically on our campus!
Fire safety is particularly important inside of your dorm room; covering, disabling, or damaging in any way a fire detection device is against the student code of conduct and will result in disciplinary action.
Inside of most academic spaces and other buildings on campus there are an Emergency Response guide that provides specific detailed information for various emergencies that may occur on campus. Fire safety is included in this guide and indicates evacuation routes, meeting locations, fire extinguisher locations (if applicable) and other valuable resources.
There are certain buildings and spaces across campus that are alarmed after-hours and any kind of alarm that gets triggered results in a response from on-duty Public Safety staff. All alarms are investigated as being serious until proven to be either a false alarm or some other kind of accidental activation.
The Department of Public Safety offers safety escorts across campus for students, faculty, and staff. These escorts can be requested by calling our Dispatch at 617-333-2222.
Curry College proudly offers “Blue Light Emergency Phones” across our campus as a quick and easy way to contact the Department of Public Safety in the event of an emergency.
These phones are easily identifiable has having an LED blue light on the top of the pole; for reference you can find a campus map here with Blue Light Phone locations.
Accessing the Blue Light Phone will automatically connect you with our Dispatch office and speak to a Public Safety Officer. Advise them of your location and what incident or emergency is taking place and an emergency response will be initiated immediately.
The Department of Public Safety maintains a lost & found for electronic items, personal property, and other odds and ends. We DO NOT ACCEPT clothing of any kind, food or perishable items, or prohibited items. The Student Center and the Library also maintain their own lost & found so be sure to check all three locations!
The Department of Public Safety has specific policies about lost and found items and there are deadlines for how long items are kept. Items will be discarded of or donated (if applicable) after the deadlines are met.
No items will be retained for a period of more than 1 year.
The Department of Public Safety operates a robust campus-wide shuttle service that incorporates stops on both our North and South Sides of campus in addition to the Mattapan MBTA Station where you can connect to the Mattapan Trolley System as well as the #15, #24, #28, #29, #30, #31, #33, #245, and #716 MBTA Buses.
The North Side Campus Shuttle is a loop that starts and ends at the Upper Student Center shuttle stop and will service all of North Campus including stops at the Athletic Lot, Miller Field House, LCOM, Hafer, Lombard and State, 886, Mayflower, and NCRH.
The South Side Campus Shuttle is a loop that starts and ends at the Lower Student Center shuttle stop and will service all of South Campus including stops at Bell Hall, Tennis Court Lot, Main Gate Lot, Main House Lot, SCRH and Milton, Cottage, Kennedy, and Suites.
